We all dislike him at first, because he appears in Degrassi Junior High as Joey's enemy in the episode "Fight". He appears again in the season premiere of Degrassi High as one of the bullies of Degrassi. He, along with Nick and Tabi are the people who initiate new students. Dwayne is obnoxious, immature, and depictly regarded as the bully.

It is not until the premiere of the fifth season of Degrassi when we find out that Dwayne tests positive for HIV that we feel any sympathy for him. We start to see how he struggles through the hallways of prejudice at school, home, and with his friends. He hides his virus from the world, except Joey, because they have a fight and Joey sheds blood. Dwayne yells at him to stay away from him, telling him that he is HIV positive.

HIV and AIDS comes close to home this season. Dwayne breaks the common stereotypes of AIDS, by being heterosexual, and not taking intravenus drugs. We feel for him, and he longer is seen as the bad guy, but as a victim. We see his life from another point of view, rather as a person with HIV, rather than a bully.
